Finding your family

Keen on finding out more about your own family tree? There are incredible resources available online but it can be really helpful to spend time with others who are also keen about their family history stories.

Family History Societies offer immense value as you set to work on finding out where – and who – you came from.

Most societies only charge a small annual fee but provide books, journals, maps, microfilm and microfiche records, CD and USB records, indexes, cemetery transcripts and local and family histories.

You can also join in with regular meetings, talks and walks but be warned – genealogy is highly addictive!

Ever wondered what drives people to investigate their family roots?

It’s not just about bragging rights or lineage; there are many reasons folks delve into genealogy.

Curiosity: Some are simply curious about their origins, wanting to know where they came from and who their ancestors were.

Connection: Researching family history can strengthen bonds and connect with living or deceased ancestors.

Healing: For some, it can be a way to heal from trauma or loss, gaining a better understanding of their struggles.

Heritage and Culture: It can help people learn more about their heritage and culture, providing a sense of pride and identity.

Self-Discovery: Ultimately, it’s a journey of self-discovery, gaining a better understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

Tips for beginners:

  • Talk to family members for stories or information.
  • Start with yourself and work your way back.
  • Join a local family history society to connect with others.
  • Use online resources like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org.
  • Visit libraries and archives for records not available online.

Three Great Reasons to Join Your Local Family History Society

Unearth Your Family’s History: Start the journey to uncover your family’s roots and learn about their lives. Family history societies provide access to a wealth of resources, including historical records, local archives and experienced genealogists, to guide you through tracing your lineage.

Connect with a Community of Enthusiasts: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion for genealogy. Family history societies offer regular meetings, workshops, and social events where you can connect with fellow researchers, exchange ideas, join special interest groups, and find support and encouragement from others.

Preserve Your Family’s Legacy: As you dig into your family’s past, you become the keeper of their stories and experiences. Family history societies provide opportunities to preserve these precious memories by helping you document your findings, create family trees, and contribute to the collective knowledge of your family’s history.
